G-Wale - GNSS Supported Measurement of Water Level
Description
The aim of the G-WaLe project is to develop and apply a mobile self-contained water level measurement device using Global Navigation Satellite Systems like GPS or Galileo.
This system is intended to support and improve current flood forecast infrastructures, while being small, of low cost and easy to install.
The proposed solution foresees a mobile floater system with integrated GNSS receivers. The information on the vertical position of the floater provides the information on the actual water level. Collecting information from many floaters anchored along the course of a river provides the profile and change rate of the water level.
Special Feature
The G-WaLe system is inexpensive, mobile and easy to install. In addition, while using GNSS, the system can be used easily and quickly all over the world.
Result
Currently the second prototype has been finished and tested successfully. In the next step, several floaters will be produced and the system will be used for data acquisition on the river Rhine.
